Here at Delux Deco, we provide a wide range of luxury corner sofas that offer unrivalled comfort and style, allowing you to elevate your living space into something truly spectacular. Your living room should be a sanctuary – a place you go to unwind and relax after a long day. Our premium sofas certainly afford you sufficient snugness to do so, but it’s understandable that you’ll want to put your own stamp on your new seating solution.
Whilst we provide ample opportunity for you to customise your sofa to suit your room and needs, sometimes, a throw pillow or two can really finish off the look. After all, a living room isn’t complete unless it looks and feels inherently yours.
Throw pillows used to provide much needed support and comfort, and whilst our corner sofas don’t require any help on that front, throw pillows can make a nice decorative addition that can tie your sofa in to the overall theme of the room.
That being said, it’s not quite as simple as buying a handful of pillows and placing them any which way on your sofa. You want your pillows to complement the sofa and the room, but not block the functionality of the settee. The last thing anyone wants is to have to pile up 10 pillows on the floor just so they can use the sofa for its intended purpose.
To help you enhance your sofa and your living room in a cohesive and sensical way, we’ve put together our top tips on how to dress a corner sofa with cushions – the proper way.
Choosing the right number of throw cushions
First of all, it’s a numbers game. If you buy too many pillows, your sofa will be drowning in them and it will become unusable. On the other hand, if you buy too few, your sofa will sparse and like an afterthought. With this in mind, we’d recommend no more than seven or eight pillows at an absolute maximum.
Types of throw pillows
There are multiple types of throw pillows, and it’s important you get the combination right if you want your sofa to look good. Firstly, you’ll need base pillows. These are larger, plain pillows that can act as a backdrop for the other pillows to pop. If you have six pillows on your sofa, two of them should be base pillows. Try and choose colours similar to your sofa, or within the same colour family.
Next, you’ll need your medium pillows. As the name suggests, these should be medium in size and in a contrasting colour to the base pillow. They don’t have to be as plain, but they shouldn’t be too bold, either. For example, if one of your base pillows is navy, add a medium mustard pillow in front of it with a fringed edge. Your medium pillows can all be different to generate interest and creativity in different areas of your sofa.
Finally, you’ll need two or three interesting throw pillows. These are smaller pillows with a bold pattern or design on. They can be as flamboyant and out there as you like. If you’re struggling with prints, consider a shaped pillow such as a circle or a flower. It will pique interest and stand out from the crowd without clashing with the rest of the room.
Dare to be bold – if you have a more eccentric, boho style, don’t force your cushions to conform. Neat and perfectly complementary patterns can look excellent, but so can contrasting patterns and colours with no real correlation to each other. As long as you have base, medium and interest pillows, your formation will look good,
Arranging the pillows
Once you have your pillows secured, you need to know how to arrange cushions on a corner sofa. We’d recommend stacking a base pillow, a medium pillow and an interesting pillow in the corner. The elbow of a corner sofa is often bigger than most people realise, and a good way of filling the space is by focusing a concentration of throw pillows in that area. The rest can be stacked on the longest edge. If you have a U-shaped sofa, it’s advisable to buy more pillows to fill both corners, leaving the middle sections sparser with just base and medium cushions.
Don’t make the mistake of filling every possible gap with a pillow – it will look overcrowded and detract from the beautiful craftsmanship of the sofa itself. Concentrate on the corners and long sides. In the case of a U-shape, you can always add a throw blanket on the end section to cement the cosiness.
